Breaking: Buhari Appoints Alkali Baba As New Acting Inspector General Of Police

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday approved the appointment of DIG Usman Alkali Baba as the new Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) with immediate effect.

Minister of Police Affairs Maigari Dingyadi disclosed the President’s directive this afternoon, in Abuja.

He disclosed this to State House Correspondents in Abuja Tuesday of the change in leadership of the police force.

The President had on February 4, 2021 extended the tenure of Mohammed Adamu as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for three months.

Buhari’s extension of Adamu’s tenure generated lots of controversies as many people, including prominent lawyers kicked against the move.

Adamu has spent two months and three days of the extension.

Adamu was in Imo State to assess damages done in Monday’s attack on police command headquaters and correctional Centre in Owerri when he was removed

While in Imo state, Adamu vowed to clamp down on members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) whom he said carried out the attack on the Imo state police command headquarters.

Speaking after inspecting the damage caused by the attack, the IGP directed police officers to use “maximum force” against IPOB members which has been outlawed.

He also said there is “no hiding place” for the IPOB members.

“Those that were released by the attackers, I have been told, some of them belong to the IPOB group; the proscribed IPOB group,” he said.

According to Adamu, “We are sending this message to them that there will be no hiding place. They will be re-arrested and many more of the criminals within that group will be arrested.

“Whether in their homes and forest, we are determined to fish them out. I have instructed my men to use maximum force with the guns available to us.

“We have the authority to defend the country, which they don’t have. We will not allow these criminals to succeed.”
