Residents Of Owerri React As Government Demolishes Okorocha's Tunnel
Mix reactions continue to trail the demolition of General Aguiyi Ironsi tunnel constructed at the House of Assembly Junction on the Owerri/Port Harcourt Road, Imo State by the former administration of Rochas Okorocha in Imo state.
The former governor Rochas Okorocha had constructed the tunnel during his administration to ease traffic on the road and stop the incessant road accidents occurring at that junction.
A staff of the construction company, engaged by the government to demolish the tunnel who chose to be unanimous, told our correspondent that the state government had contracted them to build a roundabout at the site to replace the tunnel.
Meanwhile residents of the capital city of Owerri have different opinions concerning the ongoing demolition of the tunnel.
Some of the people interviewed by our correspondent commended the state government for the courage to demolish the tunnel, which they described as a disaster and a danger to road users because of the poor quality of the tunnel.
Others, are of the opinion that the state government should awarded the contract to a better contractor who will redesign the tunnel and make it stronger and better than demolishing it entirely for a different (new) project there. They are of the opinion that having a tunnel strongly and well built, is better than a mere roundabout as alleged.
However, supporters of the Okorocha administration and political family described the Uzodinma's government action as an act of vendetta.
A resident around the area Ifeyinwa Amadi, commended the state government for its action, saying the tunnel was poorly constructed and noted that whenever it rains the tunnel is also flooded.
“I commend the Uzodinma administration for the demolition of the tunnel because it was poorly constructed and it is a danger to motorists. I also want the government to demolish the one at Concorde junction,” she said.
